What is the Vagus Nerve and its function
It is one of the twelve cranial nerves (the tenth, to be exact) that travels through most of the body, connecting the brain with vital organs such as the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, and liver. Its function is to regulate the body's involuntary activities and maintain internal balance. During a state of calm, the vagus nerve is active; during a state of stress, our sympathetic nervous system takes over to prepare us to react, and it is then the vagus nerve (as part of the parasympathetic system) that brings everything back to a state of calm.

Example
When we are in an anxious, fearful, or sad state, the vagus nerve receives these signals and can alter functions such as heart rate, breathing, or digestion. Conversely, if our body is in a state of relaxation and safety, it is the vagus nerve that sends signals to the brain to promote a more stable and serene emotional state. It is the only nerve capable of directly influencing our mental, emotional, digestive, cardiac, and immune states.
